Anastasia Korpachyova, 23, was stabbed twice in her neck by her attacker on Friday in Soka, in the Saitama prefecture, before he pushed her into a river. The woman was pulled out by a passersby who saw the incident but she died later in hospital.

Just an hour before the attack Korpachyova, the wife of a 57-year-old Japanese national, filed a complaint to police saying that she was being stalked by a Pakistani man near her home. Police said she had been involved in a row with her attacker before she was killed.

The Pakistani man, Mohammad Alam, 38, was arrested by police in his car near a supermarket on Monday. He said he had been dating Korpachyova and, according to Japanese media, as good as confessed to the murder.
