Lucknow : Tension gripped a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district Friday, a day after some unidentified people desecrated a statue of Dalit icon Bhimrao Ambedkar, police said.
Activists of the state’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and other residents of Beramao village took to the streets in protest Thursday after the statue was found damaged. Jaunpur is about 200 km from Lucknow.
“We have already registered a case at the Mungrabad Shahpur police station against unidentified people,” police inspector Lalji Yadav told IANS on telephone.
Following the series of protests, security has been strengthened in the village, added Yadav.
