This right was exercised during the ninth general election Dec 29 last year, but the total number of such votes was small, a media report said Friday.

A special cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Thursday approved an ordinance, originally promulgated last year by then military-backed caretaker government.

The cabinet approved in principle the Representation of People Order (RPO) Ordinance, 2008.

The cabinet also considered the “postal vote”, which became an issue during the last election with special reference to Bangladeshi nationals living abroad and over 40,000 soldiers performing peace-keeping duties for the UN.

Referring to the practice of the “postal voting” in many countries, the prime minister sought necessary measures for introducing it in the country’s polls to ensure voting rights of all citizens, The Daily Star said Friday.
