Iran has not proven nuclear intentions are peaceful: US

By DPA,

Washington : Iran has yet to convince the international community that it has no intention to build nuclear weapons, the US said Thursday after the release by the UN’s nuclear watchdog of a new report on Iran’s activities.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna said Iran had considerably slowed – but not halted – its uranium-enrichment programme and was still not cooperating fully with the agency.

“We view this report as another opportunity lost to resolve international concerns,” US State Department spokesman Gordon Duguid said in a statement.

“Absent Iranian compliance with its international nuclear obligations and transparency with the IAEA, the international community cannot have confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of Irans programme.”

Iran has rejected calls to suspend its enrichment programme despite three rounds of sanctions by the UN Security Council. Iran insists the programme is intended to create civilian nuclear energy.
