Indian markets open in the green

Mumbai : Indian equities rose soon after the opening bell Wednesday with a key index starting trade higher than its last closing figure.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex) opened at 8,913.44 points, higher than its 8,822.06 point close Tuesday. About 10 minutes into trade, it was at 8,954.65 points, 1.5 percent or 132.59 points higher than its previous close.

At the same time, the S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was at 2,766.4 points, 1.19 percent up from its last close of 2,733.9.

The BSE midcap index was 1.46 percent higher, while the BSE smallcap index was up 1.01 percent.

Overnight, US stock markets closed on a high following Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s assessment that the the recession affecting the world’s largest economy could begin to turn around this year, if massive government action to revive it is successful.
