Janwadi Party activists, police clash in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow : Nearly 800 activists of a regional party clashed Wednesday with the police here and pelted stones at at least 10 public vehicles, a police officer said.

The activists of the Janwadi Party were demanding special reservation quota for the most backward classes.

They staged demonstrations and targeted public vehicles in front of the state assembly in Hazratganj area here. The protesters also pelted stones at district officials and the police administration.

Later, the activists were baton-charged by the police.

“In order to prevent the protesters from being unruly, we used force to disperse the mob,” deputy inspector general Lucknow N.K. Srivastava told IANS on telephone.
