Baghdad : Lawyers of Muntadhar al-Zaidi, the Iraqui journalist who threw his shoes at US president George W. Bush, confirmed that the trial scheduled for Dec 31 was postponed after an appeal was filed at the Annulment Court.
The public hearing that should have taken place Wednesday was adjourned for a new date, noted Ahlam al-Lami, member of the group of lawyers defending the journalist accused of attacking a foreign head of state.
Al-Lami said the Defense Committee demanded the Annulment Court modify the legal description of the crime imputed to al-Zaidi regarding article 223 of the Iraqi Penal Code that envisages sentences from 7 to 15 years in prison.
He also demanded release on bail for the 29-year journalist since waiting for a judicial response to those demand could mean postponement of the trial probably until next month.
