Jamia Millia teacher awarded with US Fulbright Fellowship

New Delhi: Prof Akhtarul Wasey, Professor in the Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, has become the first Jamia teacher to be awarded with the US Fulbright Fellowship and the first Fulbright awardee from India in the field of Islamic Studies.

Prof Wasey has recently returned after a successful stint as Fulbright Scholar to the US. He was attached to the Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio as part of the Fulbright Interfaith Community Action Program from September to December 2008.

Prof Wasey gave lectures, interacted with student groups, NGOs, community and outreach discussion groups as well as participated in interfaith events ranging from Hindu Awareness Day to the Jewish Sukkot. He participated in the Fund for Peace Discussion on Uses of American Power in the 21st Century and spoke to the local Muslim population on the need for interfaith dialogue. He lectured in the classrooms of Xavier University on subjects ranging from Islamic Theology to the subjects specific to the practice of Islam in India, says a release from Jamia.

The most significant event of his three-month stay was his participation in the panel discussion on ‘A Common Word’. He also gave talks on ‘Living in a majority Culture as a Member of a Minority Culture’, ‘Islam and Democracy’, etc.
