Addressing the press this morning in New Delhi, Pranab said that India now expected Pakistan to conduct prompt investigation and take strict action against the guilty.

“The material is linked to elements in Pakistan. It is our expectation that the Pakistan government will promptly undertake further investigation,” he added.

Mukherjee’s statement assumes significance in the aftermath of Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s assertion yesterday that they will not hand over suspects to India “unless evidence was provided.” The Indian External Affairs Minister said “We have handed to Pakistan evidence of links between 26/11 terrorists and elements in Pakistan. Pakistan should implement commitments to India made at the highest level.

“I hope the world will unite to eliminate the threat of terror,” he said and added that resident heads of foreign missions will be briefed on the Mumbai attacks developments in the next 24 hours.

Reports have indicated that India’s Foreign Secretary Shivshanker Menon has summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Shahid Malik to hand over the evidence.
