Mumbai: The four police officers suspended in Khwaja Yunus custodial death case are likely to be reinstated. Mumbai Police Commissioner Hasan Ghafoor is believed to be reviewing the files of the case and he is likely to forward them to the state government this week.
Khwaja Yunus, an engineer by profession, was accused in 2002 Ghatkopar BEST bus blast case. He was picked up by police near his house in Parbhani and some days later in January 2003 he reportedly died in police custody.
The police said that Yunus had fled away from their custody on January 7, 2003 when they were taking him to Aurangabad for investigation and their vehicle had met with an accident at Jategaon. They had lodged a complaint too against him in the effect.
But later the state CID to which the case was handed over in May 2003 revealed that the police complaint about the escape was ‘maliciously false’.
Four police officers: Inspector Rajaram Vhanmane, Sub-Inspector Praful Bhosale, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Hemant Desai and Ashok Khot were arrested on March 5 in connection with the custodial death of Khwaja Yunus and later they were suspended.
The state CID in its investigation report regarding custodial death of Khwaja Yunus had recommended action against some police officers but there was no mention of the four suspended officers in the report.
According to media reports the police commissioner Hasan Ghafoor is believed to have said that the reinstatement of the four police officers is being considered.
However, the state CID chief S P S Yadav is silent in the matter.
