Guwahati : The main accused in the New Year’s day serial bombings in this Assam city was shot dead by security forces Thursday, police said.
Pranjal Deka, an explosives expert with the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), was gunned down in a firefight at village Ghilakuti near Rangiya town, about 70 km west of here.
“It was a joint Assam police and army encounter. There were about three of them, including Deka,” a police official said.
Deka was involved in the Jan 1 serial explosions in Guwahati in which six people were killed and 50 wounded.
Police on Jan 2 released photographs of Deka as the prime accused in the bombings.
“Some explosives and weapons were recovered from Deka. We suspect that two more ULFA militants who were with Deka managed to escape,” the official said.
