The shootout erupted in the evening in the Kallila forests of Rajouri district, about 160 km north of Jammu, and the gunbattle was still on.

The police said a suspected militant hideout in the forests was cordoned following a tip-off. The militants, hiding there, opened fire that was retaliated, the police said, adding two policemen lost their lives in the gunfight.

The bodies of two terrorists have been recovered and their identity was being ascertained, the police said.

The gunbattle comes close on the heels of a major firefight in the Mendhar forest of Poonch district that went on for eight days and left five people dead – two militants and three security personnel – earlier this month.
