“A case has been filed against seven people, including a sub-inspector and five constables, who this morning (Monday) abducted a schoolgirl,” Bareilly district police chief Piyush Mordiya told IANS on phone.

Dakshina Tripathi, the daughter of a railway official who studies in Class 8 in the Railway Central School, was abducted on her way from her home in New Rail Colony to school, the official said.

Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted and nabbed the abductors and rescued the girl as they were about to leave Bareilly, about 250 km from the state capital.

“It appears the incident is a fallout of an old rivalry between the girls’ family and the arrested sub-inspector but we have to investigate further,” said Mordiya.

The sub-inspector identified as Brijesh Tripathi works at a police station in Farukhabad district, some 300 km from Lucknow. The constables are also from Farukhabad, police said.

“We have initiated a joint inquiry with the Bareilly police. Strict action will be taken against the policemen involved in the abduction,” Farukhabad district police chief R.B. Singh said.
