Chandigarh court convicts father, son of honour killing

Chandigarh : In one of the fastest trials in India, a local court in Chandigarh has convicted two people in a case of honour killing in just three hearings within a span of 10 days after the framing of charges.

The cae was heard in the court of additional district and sessions judge Raj Rahul Garg, who Thursday held the father and brother of the victim of killing the teenager, Promilla. The sentence will be announced Saturday.

“The girl was strangulated and then her face was smashed with a stone and acid was thrown all over her body to hide her identity. Her clothes were also torn off to give the impression that she was also raped. However that was not proved in the medical reports,” Manu Kakkar, the public prosecutor, said here Friday.

After the framing of the charges against the two accused Nov 28 last year, the court recorded the statements of the witnesses Jan 12. Defence’s evidence was recorded and final arguments were heard Jan 15. The court Jan 22 convicted the accused for murder.

According to the police, the body of 17-year-old Promila was found in a forest near Kajheri suburb here July 20 last year.

During interrogation, her father Jaswant Singh and her brother Sunil confessed to the police of killing Promilla to save the honour of the family as the victim was four months pregnant. They were arrested July 23.
