London : Noted Indian-origin doctor and inter-faith campaigner Lord Khalid Hameed Monday thanked his “mother country” for the Padma Bhushan conferred on him for services to medicine.
“This is a great honour from my mother country. There is no honour greater than the one that’s given by your mother,” Hameed told IANS.
Hameed, a successful medical entrepreneur who is chairman of the Alpha Hospital Group and CEO of the planned super-speciality London International Hospital, is also one of Britain’s leading campaigners on inter-faith issues.
As a member of the House of Lords, Lucknow-born Hameed has been touring leading universities along with other peers promoting harmony among students of various faiths.
In an interview with IANS recently, he said he had been telling Muslim students in Britain that suicide-bombing is un-Islamic.
“I tell them that ‘you need to come out of the margins and participate in nation-building. Be non-violent, go in for education and put in hard work. At the end of the day, the solution is education, education, education’,” he said.
