Siliguri : Four men, including a man and his son, were arrested near the India-Nepal border near here Wednesday for possessing illegal arms and possible involvement in smuggling and drug trafficking, officials said Wednesday.
The arrests were made from Panitanki area in West Bengal’s Siliguri sub-division by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) that guards the borders with Nepal and Bhutan.
SSB’s 22 Battalion commandant S.L. Sarkar told reporters that the troopers became suspicious while checking a group of five who had came from Nepal in a vehicle and a motorcycle.
One of the five men managed to escape, while the rest were detained for questioning and a 9 mm pistol and one magazine were seized from them.
The father-son duo was found to possess passports of both countries with addresses in Nepal and New Delhi.
They also had identity cards of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and currency of India, Bhutan and Nepal.
“The four could be involved in smuggling and drug trafficking. But now, we have arrested them under the Arms Act. Interrogation is on,” Sarkar said.
