Kuala Lumpur : Malaysia is to approach the US for the release of two of its nationals who have been detained since 2003 at the Guantanamo Bay prison for their suspected role in terrorism, a media report said.
Foreign Minister Rais Yatim said Kuala Lumpur would request permission for a meeting of police officers with the detainees – Mohammed Farik Amin or Zaid (Zubair) and Mohammed Nazir Lep or Bashir Lep (Lillie) – before deciding on the next course of action.
“We will do this expeditiously before deciding on other steps that can be taken through the diplomatic channel,” he told media Wednesday.
“Efforts to bring home the two will take some time even though US President Barack Obama has signed an executive order to close down the American-run prison in Cuba,” the minister was quoted by The Star as saying.
