New Delhi : With a new elected government in place in Dhaka, India will seek its cooperation in ending terrorism emanating from Bangladesh when External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee travels there on February nine.
The two sides are expected to discuss Bangladesh’s proposal for setting up of joint anti-terror mechanism to fight the menace.

Mukherjee’s visit will provide the first high-level contact between the two countries since the Sheikh Hasina government returned to power earlier this month.

Security issues, particularly India’s concerns over Bangladesh being used by terrorists, will be high on the agenda during Mukherjee’s visit, sources said.

The new government has indicated its willingness to cooperate in the fight against terrorism and the External Affair’s visit will provide an opportunity to take it further.

Mechanisms are also expected to formed in economic sector to give fillip to the relations in this area.

Connectivity, particularly the proposal for use of Chittagong port by India, will also be part of discussions.

“For the last two years, we have been dealing with a government of officials. Now, we need to give a political impetus,” an official said.
