New Delhi : The Congress Saturday said Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Maneka Gandhi’s reaction to the alleged security threat to her son Varun was “most ironical” and wondered how she had failed to react as strongly to her son’s anti-Muslim speeches.
“I am finding (it) most ironical that Mrs. Maneka Gandhi is reacting so strongly,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told NDTV.
“She did not react so strongly” when Varun made anti-Muslim election speeches in Uttar Prades’s Pilibhit constituency that “created the biggest upheaval and divided this society”, Singhvi said.
The Congress spokesman said the voice in the CDs showing Varun’s speeches has been “forensically proved to be of her son”.
Maneka Gandhi wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh alleging that the home minister was taking the “threats” to her son’s life lightly.
“The home ministry has taken these threats very casually – it is as if you want Varun Gandhi to be killed,” she said.
“The home minister told me he cannot protect everyone in this country,” Maneka Gandhi said.
Varun had claimed that underworld criminals arrested in Delhi Tuesday were plotting to kill him.
Six sharpshooters of Chhota Shakeel, one of India’s most wanted gangsters, were arrested from different parts of the capital Saturday, with police saying “some VVIPs” were on their hit list.
