“At least six trains have been cancelled and two trains have been stopped on route. Some trains have also been diverted and re-scheduled,” a senior railway official told IANS.

The trains which have been cancelled are Howrah-Titlagarh Ispat Express, Howrah-Secunderabad Falaknuma Express, Howrah-Chennai Coromandel Express and Howrah-Hyderabad East Coast Express and Howrah-Bhubaneswar-Howrah Jan Shatabdi Express.

Bhubaneswar-Howrah Dhauli Express scheduled to leave Bhubaneswar Friday has also been cancelled, he said.

East Coast Railway has taken measures to stop at important stations where food, transport and medical facilities for passengers would be available, the official said.

Congress activists blocked roads, damaged buses and ransacked government offices as they enforced a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in West Bengal protesting a violent attack on party legislators allegedly by supporters of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in a village earlier this week.
