Four ‘SIMI members’ arrested in Akola

Mumbai: The Akola Police on Sunday arrested four alleged members of banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) when they were returning from allegedly a secret meeting held at Maana village in Akola district. The police also seized some objectionable literature and the Indica they were traveling in.

As per media reports, the meeting was organized at a mosque in Maana (Akola) on July 18, and it was attended by at least 25 SIMI activists and sympathizers, including the arrested ones; Abdul Razzaq Abdul Karim (40) from Jalna, Masood Khan Mehboob Khan (36) from Aurangabad, Sayed Ibrahim Sayed Moosa (47) from Yavatmal and Mohammad Rafiq Abdur Rahman (51) from Murtizapur in Akola.

An anonymous ATS official has been quoted in media saying that that Razzaq, Masood and Rafiq were full-time SIMI activists. He added that since Rafiq was from Maana he stayed back there after meeting – from where he was arrested on Monday at 3:45 pm- while the rest three had left for Darwa in Yavatmal district in an Indica (MH-23-E-3773). On the way they were apprehended by police.

‘Incriminating documents, 10 religious books, one CD, one note book, five to six banners are reported to have been seized from the quarter.

The four have been arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for conducting meetings of a banned organization and possessing objectionable literature.

The police are trying to know the motive behind the meet. Additional police commissioner police (ATS), Parambir Singh reportedly told that a team ha been sent to Akola to get more details about the arrested members.
