UK canceled five military contracts with Israel — UN assembly president

Geneva : President of the General Assembly Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann said that the UK government cancelled earlier this month five contracts involving arms sales to the Israeli military, in response to actions taken in Gaza during the assault of December 2008-January 2009.

Brockmann added that UK Foreign Minister David Miliband acknowledged that that the contracts involved spare parts for a warship that shelled Gaza during the war, and reported that the UK and European Union Statutes forbid exported weapons “to be used for internal or external aggression.” The message of the UN General Assembly president was read by Chairman of the Committee of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, Ambassador Paul Badji, during the inaugural session of the Committee which holds its meetings in Geneva today and tomorrow.
