New Delhi : Delhi Police Saturday once again questioned Himanshu Sabharwal, son of Ujjain professor H.S. Sabharwal who died after being beaten up by students in his college August 2006, following the murder of his close aide in Delhi University late Thursday. However, no arrest has been made in the case yet.
The body of Parminder Singh, who worked as accountant with Himanshu’s advertising firm in Gurgaon, was found in the Maurice Nagar area near Khalsa College in the north campus by a passer-by around 11.30 p.m. Thursday. Singh’s body bore six to seven stab wounds.
“Himanshu was called for questioning Saturday for the second time,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Sagar Preet Hooda told IANS, adding that no arrests have been made in the case as of now.
Hooda refused to divulge anything further. “We are investigating the case and cannot divulge anything beyond this right now.”
At present, the police have ruled out robbery as the motive behind the murder as they found Singh’s motorcycle near his body. However, his mobile phone was yet to be recovered. The police said they were investigating all angles, including personal enmity.
Professor Sabharwal had died after being beaten up by students in Ujjain’s Madhav College August 2006. However, a Maharashtra court July 13 had acquitted six activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) — the students wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), charged with beating Prof Sabharwal to death — due to lack of evidence.
According to police sources, Singh, Himanshu and their friend Pooja — a freelance journalist with a weekly newspaper published from Delhi — had met in a restaurant in Connaught Place around 5.30 p.m. There they had decided to plaster posters seeking ‘Justice for Professor Sabharwal’ in Delhi University to gather people for a candlelight vigil at India Gate Sunday.
Singh had come on his motorcycle, while Himanshu brought Pooja in his car, and they left for the university campus the same way.
According to police, Himanshu said they had been putting up posters at various places till around 11 p.m., when they left and that was the last time they saw Singh.
There were also reports that Himanshu had named members of the ABVP as being behind the murder. ABVP has vehemently denied the allegations.
The candlelight vigil seeking justice for Prof Sabharwal will be held at India Gate Sunday between 4.30 and 6.30 p.m.
