New Delhi: An alert passer-by prevented two youths from escaping after he saw them throw chilly powder in the eyes of a goods supplier and snatch his money, police said Monday. The youths have been arrested.
Sunil (20) and Vikas (19) were arrested when they were trying to escape after robbing Ram Avtar Gupta (50) near Modi Mill flyover, a police official said.
A passer-by Vishwajeet Bhati informed police when he saw the youths throw chilly powder in the eyes of Gupta and snatch his money bag at knife point.
When Bhati tried to intervene, the two robbers stopped a man travelling on a motorcycle and tried to escape on his bike.
By this time, a police party also reached the spot, and with the help of Bhati the youths were taken into custody. Police also recovered Gupta’s money, Rs.34,370, from them.
“One of the accused, Sunil, works as an auto driver, while his accomplice, Vikas, is a tailor. Both wanted to earn quick money to buy expensive gifts for their family for Raksha Bandhan,” the official said.
Gupta, a supplier of Nova brand tea, was ferrying tea in the tempo pick-up when the incident occurred. He used to visit shops in south and southeast Delhi to deliver the tea and collect the sale money.
“Yesterday (Sunday), he was travelling in his tempo pick up when one of the robbers tried to stop him at Sarita Vihar flyover. When they did not succeed, the robbers followed him. When his vehicle slowed down while climbing the Modi Mill flyover towards Nehru Place, the robbers threw chilly powder in his eyes and snatched his money bag containing Rs.34,370 at knife point,” the police official added.
