Couple killed in accident outside Badal’s home

Chandigarh : An elderly couple was killed in a road accident outside the home of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here Monday, police said.

Davinder Singh, 54, a Punjab government employee, and his 50-year-old wife Gurpreet Kaur, a teacher, died in the accident within Chandigarh’s high-security zone in Sector 2.

“Davinder Singh and Gurpreet Kaur were on their way to a relative’s house on their scooter when they were hit by a car driven by Ajay Kumar, who is based in Delhi. The couple died on their way to hospital,” Har Sahai Sharma, the officer in charge of the local police station, told IANS.

Kumar has been arrested. The Honda Accord car also hit a motorcycle but its riders escaped unhurt.

A security guard, stationed outside Badal’s residence, told IANS: “I was inside the premises but the impact of the collision was such that we heard a loud noise even inside there. It seemed that the driver had lost control over the car.”
