Srinagar : Low voter turnout was witnessed in the Hazratbal assembly constituency here for which the balloting began early Wednesday amid shutdown and protests over the alleged rape and murder of two women last week.
A few voters were seen outside various polling booths in the constituency for which by-poll was necessitated after National Conference president Farooq Abdullah quit the state assembly to contest Lok Sabha elections.
The National Conference has fielded Mustafa Kamal, Abdullah’s younger brother, against Asiya Naqash of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Kashmir Valley has been rocked by continuous protests against the rape and murder of Neelofar Jan, 22 and her kin Asiya Jan, 17. The women were found dead Saturday in a field near their house in the south Kashmir Shopian town, 60 km from here.
