Lucknow : A Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator was Wednesday arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district for assaulting a senior official of the postal department, police said Wednesday.
“Durga Prasad Yadav was arrested today from his residence for beating up Shyam Sunder Sharma, senior superintendent of post department, a few months ago,” additional superintendent of police O.P. Srivastava told IANS on telephone from the district.
In February 2009, Yadav along with his aides had barged into Sharma’s office and beat him up after he refused to reinstate a suspended employee, police said.
After the arrest, the legislator was produced before a court and was sent to jail.
“Yadav’s bail application will be heard Thursday,” said Srivastava.
Yadav represents the Sadar constituency in Azamgarh, about 300 km from here.
