New Delhi : Voicing concern over the attacks on Indians in Australia, Leader of Opposition L K Advani on Friday asked the government to send a parliamentary delegation to assess the situation there.
“The nation is worried as to why such a situation has arisen. You have conveyed your concerns to the Australian government, but I feel that somebody should go there. A parliamentary delegation should go there to assess the situation and reflect the nation’s concerns,” he said while participating in a Lok Sabha (Lower House) debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President for her address.
He said such a visit would also reassure the Indians in Australia in the wake of several incidents of attacks against them in the recent past.
Advani, who was delving on foreign policy issues, referred to China and said India should not remain silent when Beijing lays claims on Arunachal Pradesh and when there are reports of China helping Pakistan’s nuclear programme. “We should respond and show we are strong,” he said.
He expressed happiness over Communist leader Madhav Nepal becoming Nepal’s Prime Minister and hoped a “new chapter” will begin in bilateral relations on the basis of traditional ties.
During the brief rule by Maoists, it appeared that Chinese influence in Nepal was growing which was not good for India, he said.
Advani also voiced concern over continued illegal immigration from Bangladesh.
