Kolkata: Condemning the recent poll-related violence in West Bengal, Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi Tuesday said such “purposeless violence” was “a matter of regret”.
“Reports of violence between supporters of different political formations in the wake of elections in our state are a matter of regret. They are also a matter of anxiety,” Gandhi said in a communique released by the Raj Bhavan here.
He was referring to reports of clashes involving cadres of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the main opposition Trinamool Congress, which trounced the Left in the Lok Sabha polls.
“Such violence, apart from being purposeless, does no credit to its perpetrators,” he said.
“In a mature democracy such as ours, neither vengeance and vendetta nor bragging and bravado can be allowed either by the victorious or by the defeated.
“I urge all concerned to halt this cycle of violence and spare our people of distress,” Gandhi said.
