Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Praveen Kumar Thursday suspended Harendra Rai, officer in charge of Ratu police station in the state capital, and ordered a case under section 304 (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code to be filed against him.

Ashok Kumar Jaiswal had gone to the police station along with his friend Vijay, whose auto rickshaw was seized by the police two days ago, to ask for the vehicle’s release. Rai’s revolver went off when an armourer was cleaning it, and the bullet first hit the ground and then ricocheted to hit Ashok, who died on the spot.

However, according to some eye witnesses who were in the police station, Rai had an argument with Jaiswal over the release of the auto-rickshaw, which took an ugly turn. Police have termed the death an accident.
