New Delhi: The government is committed to reviving the manufacturing sector and generating employment as well as resuming the stalled global trade talks, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said here Thursday.
“We need to encourage the manufacturing sector and industrial activities for providing more employment in the country,” he told industrialists at an interaction organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Sharma added that India preferred an early resumption of the Doha Round of trade talks that collapsed last year over serious differences between India and the US on tariffs, farm subsidies and market access.
Emphasising that there was a need for a rule-based multilateral global trading system, the minister said the government would “continue to take inputs from various stakeholders in the country” before going for the talks.
Sharma said he would also hold talks with state industry ministers to tackle the problems faced by the manufacturing sector.
The government would re-energise the Inter-State Trade Council for wider consultation on important trade-related matters, he added.
