“The Defence Minister (A.K. Antony) has set up the committee chaired the defence secretary Vijay Singh to draw a road map for implementing the recommendations of the Rama Rao committee,” a defence official said Thursday.

The newly constituted panel will also include the secretary (defence production), secretary (defence finance) and the three service chiefs.

The Rama Rao committee has has recommended that the DRDO focus on the critical weapons programme and outsource research in other areas to the private sector.

The committee also suggested that DRDO focus its attention on 10-14 critical projects like missiles, anti-missiles systems, light combat aircraft, aero engines, electronic warfare, development of high altitude extreme endurance weaponised unmanned aerial vehicles.

The independent and external committee of experts was constituted in 2007 to conduct a comprehensive review of the DRDO and suggest how the organisation be made more efficient and professional.
