“The planning committees would be headed by a cabinet minister and there would be other office-bearers such as chief of the district panchayat would act as the vice chairman and the district collector as co-vice chairman. The district development officer (DDO) would be appointed as member while all legislators and MPs would be the permanent members in their respective constituencies,” he said.

The committee will suggest ways to ensure not only the equitable distribution of water among the districts from reservoirs and rivers but will also help the district panchayats and municipalities in charting out a roadmap for development which would include upgradation of village-, town- and city-level infrastructure besides also suggesting environmental protection measures in the districts.

The groundwork for forming the committees has already begun and they could be formed within three months, the official said.

All the suggestions made by the planning committees on development issues in various districts would be subject to approval from the state government, he added.
