The leaders made the remarks on the occasion of the 56th birth anniversary of the former Pakistani prime minister who died in a terror attack during an election rally in Rawalpindi in 2007.

In separate messages, Gilani and Zardari paid their tributes to her.

Zardari thanked the party workers for upholding the values she stood for and said: “On her birthday today let us recall her warning as well as her advice.

“Her advice to the people is to fight against extremism, dictatorship, poverty and ignorance,” he said.

“The militants and extremists want to destroy the country and our way of life in the name of religion. They are blowing up schools, butchering innocent people, killing doctors for administering polio drops and closing down businesses,” said Zardari.

“To pay homage to her memory let us therefore pledge to expose the militants and fight them till the end,” he added.

Gilani said: “Although Benazir Bhutto is not among us today but people are celebrating her birthday with traditional zeal and fervor, which is an evidence of the fact that beacon of patriotism and love for people kindled by mohtarma shaheed Benazir Bhutto is still lit as ever.

“Her name will remain forever as a symbol of hope and courage,” he said.
