Tehran : Mohsen Rezaei, an opposition candidate in Iran’s June 12 presidential elections, has withdrawn his complaint to the Guardian Council regarding irregularities in the election process, Iranian media reported Wednesday.
“The (current) political, social and security situation has entered a sensitive and decisive phase, which is more important than the election,” said Rezaei in a letter to the secretary of the Guardian Council, Press TV reported.
Rezaei came third in the elections by winning 678,240 votes (1.73 percent of total vote).
The withdrawal comes as Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei accepted a request for extending the deadline to investigate complaints made to the Guardian Council.
The defeated candidates – Mir-Hossein Moussavi, Mehdi Karroubi and Mohsen Rezaei – in the hotly-contested presidential elections cried foul after incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared victor.
The opposition candidates reported over 600 irregularities in the electoral process. At least 10 people have been killed as the security forces tried to suppress the widespread protests by Moussavi supporters
