Top commanders to discuss India’s war fighting capabilities

New Delhi : Better coordination and strengthening the war fighting capabilities of the army, the navy and the air force will be high on the agenda as the Indian military’s top brass begins a two-day conference here Thursday that Defence Minister A.K. Antony will inaugurate.

“Victory through Jointness” is the theme of the biannual unified commanders conference.

“Jointness, integration and development of integrated war fighting capability will be the focus of the two-day Unified Commanders Conference opening June 25. It will deliberate upon various issues relating to services’ capabilities to meet the security challenges faced by the nation,” a defence ministry statement said Wednesday.

Among those who will attend the conference are Indian Army chief Gen. Deepak Kapoor, Indian Navy chief and chairman chiefs of staff committee Admiral Sureesh Mehta and Indian Air force chief Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik.

Air Marshal SC Mukul, the chief of Integrated Defence staff; the heads of the Andaman and Nicobar Command and the Strategic Forces Command; the heads of various tri-services training institutions like the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the College of Defence Management, Secunderabad and the National Defence Academy, Pune, will also attend the conference.

The conference will also review the achievements and progress made by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, which is being seen as the precursor of the eventual appointment of a Chief of Defence Staff as a single point reference for the armed forces.
