The meeting assumes significance against the backdrop of the demand by a section of the party to make him the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh president.

Though there was no official statement from the BJP about the meeting, the sources said Varun Gandhi discussed with RSS regional pracharak Ashok Beri and other leaders strategies for strengthening the party’s base in Uttar Pradesh.

According to them, Varun Gandhi also discussed with Beri the police case he faces for his alleged hate speeches during the election campaign.

BJP state press secretary Hero Bajpai said: “It was his personal meeting. So, party officials are not aware of the topics discussed by the BJP MP.”

According to police, a charge sheet is ready against the Pilibhit MP after forensic experts confirmed that three CDs of the speeches he allegedly delivered in his constituency in March were genuine.
