Afzal Guru hanging delayed, admits law minister

New Delhi : Union Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily Friday admitted that execution of death sentence of Afzal Guru, convicted for the attack on the Indian parliament in 2001, was being delayed because several mercy petitions had been pending.

“You cannot just pick, choose and hang,” he said in an interaction with reporters here.

“Nowhere does it happen in the world, including in Pakistan,” he said.

Moily said some 28 mercy petitions were pending for disposal and a mechanism needs to be evolved for speedy clearance of such pleas.

Indicating that the ruling Congress had no role to play in it, the law minister said in no country could a person be hanged or spared “at the discretion of any political party”.
