11 Maoist rebels arrested in Jharkhand

Ranchi : Eleven Maoist guerrillas were arrested Monday from a Jharkhand village for distriibuting pamphlets.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) guerrillas were arrested from Cheliyama village in Seraikela and Kharsawa district, about 170 km from the state capital Ranchi.

The district borders West Bengal, where security forces have launched an operation against Maoists in Lalgarh.

“They (the guerrillas) were trying to propagate the Lalgarh agenda and were attempting extort levy from the local residents,” said a senior police officer.

Maoist guerrillas are active in 18 of the 24 districts of Jharkhand. Nearly 1,500 people have been killed in Maoist-related violence in the last eight years.
