She said urban street vendors would be developed as part of the central government’s urban poverty alleviation initiatives.

“We have developed a special policy to safeguard the interests of urban street vendors. Town Vending Committee (TVC), with 40 percent members being street vendors, will be constituted in every city and town that will look after the grievances of vendors,” Selja told reporters here Monday.

Selja, who is from Chandigarh, said, “I often give people the example of Chandigarh where we have separate places like Shastri Market for vendors. There are also well-planned weekly markets for vendors in Chandigarh and it can act as a model for other places.”
