20 kg cannabis seized from car’s headlights, bumper

Ahmedabad : Sleuths of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) have seized 20 kg of cannabis worth Rs.2 million from the headlights, the bumper and even the CNG cylinder of a car at the Rajasthan-Gujarat border and arrested one man, officials said Monday.

The drug haul took place at the Ratanpur check post Sunday when officials of the NCB Gujarat unit checked a Cielo car.

“In one of the biggest seizures of contraband on the Rajasthan border this year, NCB officials seized a total of 20 kg hashish (cannabis) valued at Rs.2 million in the international market,” a member of the NCB team that found the drugs told IANS.

“This is the first case in the western sector where we have found a CNG cylinder being used to carry hashish, although it is a common practice in the northern parts of the country,” the official said.

The drug trafficker caught during the operation has been identified as Yusuf Ismail Vohra, according to a statement from Ayush Mani Tiwari, zonal director of NCB Gujarat. This is the second time he is being booked as he was first nabbed with contraband in December 1999 and sentenced to 10 years in jail, he added.

Yusuf jumped his parole in 2006 to attend his son’s marriage and has been absconding for the last two years, the official said.
