The burglars broke into Sri Lakshi Jewelers in Siddi Amber Bazar area sometime Tuesday night and took away gold and silver jewelry, the police said.

This is the second burglary in 16 years at the shop.

The crime was noticed when the owner opened the shop Wednesday morning. He told the police that he opened the shop in the afternoon and found a hole in the rear wall of the shop.

According to shop owner Kamal Agarwal, the shop was burgled in 1993 and the police failed to solve the case. The burglars had then escaped with three and a half kg of gold.

A series of burglaries in jewelry shops in the city in recent years has worried the traders. The latest burglary is the second major one after the sensational and daring burglary at Alukkas showroom in 2006.

In the biggest ever heist, burglars had taken away Rs.100 million worth of gold and diamond jewelry from Alukkas showroom in Panjagutta in the heart of the city in May, 2006.

The police, however, solved the case a few months later by arresting a gang from Mumbai.
