The incident took place Wednesday at Andhiyakhor village in Durg district, about 150 km from capital Raipur.

“Sukhiram Sahu, 27, had brought a papaya to his house and his mother Kanti Bai, 48, cut it without asking him,” R.P. Singh, the police officer investigating the case, said on phone.

He told IANS: “Sukhiram was so angry that he cut off his mother’s head with a sharp-edged weapon and then chopped off both hands and legs and set the body on fire. The locals called the police immediately and he even attacked the police with the same weapon but was arrested. It was the most brutal murder I have ever seen or heard of.”

Sukhiram, who confessed to his crime, had never acted aggressively in the past, police said. According to them, he had been unemployed for a long time and often visited Nagpur in search of work but had failed to get a job.
