New Delhi : A teenager riding a motorcycle was killed accidentally here Friday when his pillion rider’s gun went off when the latter was aiming his weapon at a policeman.
The incident took place in Goga village in Narela when police constable Kailash saw the youngsters come towards him, the pillion rider holding the weapon.
A driver with the deputy commissioner of police (anti-corruption), Kailash lives in the area and was waiting at a bus stand to reach his office.
“The pillion rider tried to open fire at the constable but the gun apparently misfired,” a senior police officer told IANS. There was a loud bang and the rider, Ravi Shankar, 19, collapsed on the ground.
The victim was a resident of Khoda colony in Ghaziabad and the bullet pierced his body just over his waist. His cousin Mahavir was holding the weapon.
“Since the bullet was fired from very close range, it got stuck in his abdomen. It was quite visible from the outside. After being hit, Ravi Shankar lost control of the motorbike and it collided with an electric pole,” said the officer.
Ravi Shankar died instantly. Mahavir managed to escape.
“We have recovered two country-made pistols, one loaded and another unloaded. The Pulsar bike bore a fake vehicle registration number,” the officer added.
Ravi Shankar was staying for the past three days at the house of Mahavir, who runs a cycle repair shop. Neither young man had a criminal past.
