Sri Nagar, India : Life in downtown areas of the city remained crippled for the third consecutive day today with stringent restrictions in place on the movement of people in the wake of protests over the killing of a youth in firing last week.
Thousands of police and paramilitary force personnel have been deployed in the areas falling under 15 police stations of interior city to implement prohibitory orders promulgated by the authorities to maintain law and order, official sources said.
The youth, Shahid Ahmad, was killed and over 30 others including six police personnel and a CRPF jawan were injured as security forces opened fire on the violent groups of youth demanding release of detained Hurriyat leaders at Nowhatta in interior city on Friday last.
The restrictions imposed by the administration on Saturday continue to remain in force, as a result of which all shops and business establishments, banks, government offices and semi-government institutions remained closed in old city today.
However, life in civil line areas was normal.
Meanwhile, residents of old city alleged that police vehicles with public address system made a round of the areas announcing imposition of curfew.
However, police denied any report of curfew being imposed.
