CPI-M leader Prabhakar Sanzgiri dead

Mumbai : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Prabhakar Sanzgiri, also a trade unionist, has died after ailing for two years, a party colleague said Tuesday. He was 88.

Sanzgiri died late Monday at his Bhandup residence here after undergoing dialysis, Sugandhi Francis, a Mumbai district CPI-M committee member, told IANS.

Sanzgiri is survived by his wife Suman, also a Maharashtra CPI-M leader, three sons and a daughter, Francis said.

Sanzgiri entered student politics six decades ago and later worked among trade unions in the state.

He was elected a legislator in 1978 and was later nominated a member of the state legislative council for nine years.

Until two years ago when he retired on health grounds, he was the Maharashtra CPI-M general secretary, Francis said.

On Feb 28, Sanzgiri was present at a function to release his biography, “Lal Chhayet Kranticha Shodh”, penned by his wife.
