One killed, seven injured in Uttar Pradesh communal clash

Lucknow : One person was killed and at least seven were injured as groups of Hindus and Muslims clashed Tuesday during a religious procession in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, police said.

Several vehicles and at least half a dozen shops were set on fire in the violence, which erupted when a group of Muslims taking out the Barawafat procession entered Faridpur area, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Vijay Gautam told IANS on telephone.

Eight people were injured in the clash. One of them succumbed to his bullet injuries in a hospital, Gautam said.

“Members of both communities resorted to stone pelting in which at least seven people were injured. Tension flared up as the warring groups torched several vehicles and about half a dozen shops in the locality,” said police inspector Karan Singh.

Of the seven injured, three have been referred to Lucknow, while the others were being treated at a government hospital in Bareilly, he added.

Police termed the situation as tense but under control. Senior police officials including the inspector general (IG) of Bareilly division, the district magistrate and others were camping in the area.

Additional police force and personnel of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been deployed in the area, district police chief B.B. Singh told IANS.
