The agitating doctors, who struck work Saturday-Sunday midnight, are protesting alleged police atrocities and demanding firm action against three policemen who, they claim, “went berserk and ill-treated Munishwar Gupta”, a member of the Indian Medical Association said.

Munishwar Gupta, director of the Kamayani Hospital here, was allegedly manhandled and dragged away from his office Saturday afternoon and later released by the police. Over half a dozen other colleagues also reportedly received minor blows.

The police had come to Kamayani Hospital to settle a dispute between a medical equipment supplier and the hospital authorities.

“The two sides were about to reach a settlement when suddenly police from three thanas (police stations) trooped in with the vice president of the company. Whoever came in their way or opposed them was roughed up,” hospital sources said.

As news of Munishwar Gupta’s arrest spread, members of the Indian Medical Association and local politicians reached the police station.

Superintendent of Police city B.P. Ashok said: “The arrested doctor has been released and a case has been registered.”
