All the deposed judges except Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry assumed office with immediate effect, TV channel Dawn News reported.

Chaudhry will assume office March 21 when the sitting chief justice retires.

The reinstated judges include five Supreme Court judges with the remaining being high court judges, according to the report.

Pakistani President Asif Zardari signed the summary of reinstatement of the deposed judges Tuesday.

In an address to the nation Monday, Gilani announced that the judges who were sacked in November 2007 would be reinstated, putting an end to a protest launched by lawyers and political activists.

Some 60 Supreme Court and High Courts judges were sacked when former President Pervez Musharraf imposed a state of emergency in November 2007.
