Committee formed to provide more accurate data on agriculture

New Delhi : The central government has constituted an expert committee that will work on providing better data for the agriculture sector, and also examine the use of remote sensing applications in agricultural statistics, according to a statement issued here Friday by the agriculture ministry.

The ministry said the committee, to be headed by eminent agriculture economist A. Vaidyanathan, would work on improving agricultural statistics and examine use of remote sensing applications in agricultural statistics.

Besides Vaidyanathan, the committee includes former chairman of the Space Commission U.R. Rao, Calcutta Statistical Association chairman S.P. Mukherjee, senior officials heading agriculture departments, and a few prominent statisticians.

The committee will also review present schemes like the Establishment of an Agency for Reporting of Agricultural Statistics (EARAS), Timely Reporting Scheme (TRS) and a scheme for Improvement of Crop Statistics (ICS), the statement added.
